If you want theory then here’s your book. Moritz Grossmann was one of the greatest German watchmakers and an extraordinary chap. He was a member of the BHI and wrote this essay in English, winning (after some confusion and not a little controversy) first prize in 1865. The edition printed in Leipzig runs to nearly 180 pages. Some essay!
I suppose the publishing was part-sponsored by those advertising in the back of the book - interesting reading.
Although his business was based in Germany (Glashutte) Moritz Grossmann was an active member of the BHI.
Herr Grossmann considered these names to be respectable - praise indeed!

A Practical and Theoretical Treatise

I have manfully perused this book, but I’m afraid it’s well beyond my mechanical and mathematical aptitudes!
