Modern Methods in Horology

Pocket Watch Workshop

I like this book.  From 1897 to 1905 Grant Hood was on the faculty of the Horological School at Bradley Polytechnic Institute, Preoria (Illinois) specialising in finishing.  In his Preface he determines that “My aim will be to make each subject as simple and clear as possible, adding illustrations in all cases where needed” and he succeeds admirably!  He takes us through all of the important repair and maintenance techniques and, unusually for an American writer, spends a whole chapter (14 pages) focussing on the ins and outs of the cylinder escapement.  Well worth obtaining for this alone, but I also enjoyed his final chapter called “Why some workmen fail to succeed” which illustrates (using photography) some of the horror repairs he’s come across.   The book concludes on page 242 with “THE END”.   The only complaint I have is that there is a contents page (called an Index) some eleven pages after “THE END” and no index.

Grant Hood taught ‘finishing’, so he should know what he’s writing about!

It covers just about everything technical.
